How to sell on WhatsApp, step by step

WhatsApp isn't a shop window: it's a shop counter. You sell the way you would in person, by talking. These are the steps that work for a small business, whether you sell services or products.

IN SHORTTo sell on WhatsApp, make it easy for people to message you (a button on your website, your Google Business Profile, your ads), reply within minutes, ask one or two questions to understand what they need, give the price plainly, suggest a clear next step and follow up once after two days if they go quiet. Most sales are lost to slow replies or to the follow-up that never gets sent.

1. Get people to message you

Put WhatsApp where people look for you: a button on your website with a pre-written message ("Hi, I'd like to know more about…"), a link on your Google Business Profile, on Instagram and in your ads. The less a customer has to type to get started, the more of them write in.

2. Reply quickly

It's the factor that matters most and costs least. People who enquire on WhatsApp often message several businesses at once, and the first good reply has the edge. If you can't keep an eye on your phone, a useful auto reply beats nothing, and an AI agent that actually answers the question is better still.

3. Ask before you send the brochure

One or two questions to understand what they need: "Is it for you or a gift?", "Roughly how big is the kitchen?", "When do you need it by?". That way your next message is about their situation, not your catalogue.

4. Give the price plainly

If someone asks how much it is and you reply "it depends, shall I call you?", plenty of them disappear. Give the price or a range and say what it depends on. Anyone still talking once they know the price is a real prospect.

5. Suggest the next step

Every message you send should end with a question that moves things on: "Does Thursday work for me to measure up?", "Shall I send you the payment link?". Without one, the conversation quietly dies. Wording to copy in WhatsApp sales message templates.

6. Follow up, once

Two days later, to anyone who didn't reply: one line and an easy way out. "Did you get a chance to look at it? If it's not right for you, just say and I won't chase." It wins back sales you'd written off. More in WhatsApp follow-up messages.

7. Measure

Note how many people message you, how many reply after hearing the price and how many buy. That tells you whether the problem is attracting, answering or closing. If you'd like that to run on its own, MultiChats replies, follows up and measures for you, and leaves the close to you.

Frequently asked questions

Can I sell on WhatsApp without an online shop?

Yes. Many businesses sell with the WhatsApp Business catalogue and a payment link. What matters is replying fast and closing with a clear step.

Is standard WhatsApp or WhatsApp Business better for selling?

WhatsApp Business: it's free and adds a business profile, a catalogue, labels and auto replies.

How many follow-up messages should I send?

One, two at most. More than that annoys people and risks blocks and spam reports that hurt your number.

Can I message people who haven't contacted me?

In the UK and the EU, unsolicited marketing messages generally need prior consent under PECR and the ePrivacy rules. Stick to people who asked or gave you their number. This is general information, not legal advice.
