The text goes after ?text= with spaces and symbols encoded (%20 is a space). Any URL encoder does it for you. Use a different message in each place ("Hi, I found you on your website", "Hi, I saw your Instagram") and you'll know which channel brings customers.
The WhatsApp Business short link and QR code
In WhatsApp Business, Business tools has a short link and QR code option that creates a wa.me/message/… link and a QR code you can print. You can set the default message and change it without changing the link. The QR works well on the counter, in the window, on a van or a business card.
Where to put it
- Website: a visible button and, on mobile, a floating one.
- Google Business Profile: as a chat link or via your website.
- Instagram and Facebook: in your bio and in click-to-WhatsApp ads.

What happens after the click
A well-placed link brings messages at all hours. If nobody replies at 10pm, the link doesn't do much. An AI agent on that number replies within a couple of minutes with your details and leaves the contact sorted for the morning.
