Home › What Is an AI Agent? A Simple Explanation

What is an AI agent, in simple terms?

An AI agent doesn't just answer: it decides what to do next and does it. Here it is without the jargon, with a real business example.

IN SHORTAn AI agent is a program that uses artificial intelligence to pursue a goal with some autonomy: it reads the situation, decides the next step and carries it out, within limits someone has set. In a business, an AI sales agent answers each customer on WhatsApp, sorts them, follows up and alerts a person when it's time to close.

The short version

A tool waits to be used. An agent has a job. You don't tell it every step; you tell it the goal ("get serious enquiries booked in for a visit"), the rules ("never quote below the price list") and when to stop ("hand over if anyone complains"). It works out the rest, one conversation at a time.

AI agent vs chatbot vs ChatGPT

ChatGPT answers what you ask it. A chatbot follows a script of options. An agent has a goal, for example getting the customer to book a viewing, and chooses what to do to get there: ask, inform, wait a few days and write again, or pass the conversation to a person. The WhatsApp version of this difference is covered in chatbot vs AI agent.

How it works under the hood

  • A model (a large language model) that understands text and writes replies.
  • Context: what it knows about the business and the history of each conversation.
  • Tools: the actions it is allowed to take, such as sending a message, tagging a contact or scheduling a follow-up.
  • Limits: what it must never do, and when a human takes over.

Examples of AI agents

  • A sales agent on WhatsApp that answers enquiries and follows up on quotes.
  • A support agent that resolves common questions and escalates the rest.
  • A coding agent that edits software and runs its tests.
  • A research agent that searches the web and writes a summary.

They have the same shape: a goal, tools, memory and limits.

A small business example

A building firm gets a WhatsApp at eleven at night asking for a quote. The agent replies, asks for photos and measurements, gives a rough price range from the firm's own figures, offers a day to come and measure and, if the customer goes quiet, writes again two days later. The owner finds it all waiting in the morning. More examples by trade in industries.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI agent replace a person?

Not for what matters. It takes the repetitive work away; negotiating, closing and handling difficult cases still belong to people.

Is it safe to let it act on its own?

With limits, yes: a cap on messages, things it can't promise and a handover to a person when needed. You can always start in draft mode, where a person approves every message.

Is ChatGPT an AI agent?

On its own, it's mostly an assistant that answers you. It becomes part of an agent when it's given a goal, tools to act with and rules about when to stop.

Can AI agents make mistakes?

Yes. That's why a good agent has clear limits, keeps a record of what it did and hands anything uncertain to a person.
