WhatsApp Business number banned: why it happens and what to do

Losing your business number on WhatsApp is a nasty shock. There's almost always a specific cause and it can almost always be avoided. Here it is plainly, including what applies to tools like ours.

IN SHORTWhatsApp bans or restricts numbers when it sees spam-like behaviour: lots of messages to people who haven't saved your number, many reports or blocks, identical bulk messages or unofficial apps. If it happens, you can request a review from the app. To avoid it: message people who know you, at a human pace, with individual wording, and stop if messages stop being delivered.

Why WhatsApp bans a number

  • Reports and blocks from recipients. The strongest signal.
  • Volume and speed: many messages in a row, especially to new numbers.
  • Identical messages to many people, shortened links, chain messages.
  • Unofficial or modified apps and some automation.
  • Brand-new numbers that start sending heavily from day one.

Temporary or permanent

A temporary ban usually shows a countdown and lifts on its own; treat it as a warning. A permanent ban says the number can no longer use WhatsApp. Either way the app offers Request a review: explain clearly what you do (you're a business, who you message and why). A reply can take from hours to several days.

How to avoid it

  • Only message people who gave you their number or contacted you first.
  • Human pace: pauses between messages and a daily cap, lower in a number's first days.
  • Individual wording, never the same promotion to hundreds.
  • Make it easy to say no, and respect it.
  • For volume, the official API with approved templates.

In the UK and EU, unsolicited marketing messages also need prior consent under PECR and GDPR, which is one more reason not to message strangers.

What MultiChats does, and its risk

MultiChats links your numbers by QR code, like WhatsApp Web, and doesn't use the official API: Meta can restrict a number that sends messages in bulk. We work with daily caps, pauses and an automatic brake, but the risk isn't zero and we tell you before you start.

MultiChats applies daily caps per number, pauses between messages, individual wording and stops a number if three messages in a row go undelivered. In English-speaking markets it's used to reply to and follow up with people who have already contacted you, not to message strangers.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a WhatsApp ban last?

Temporary bans usually last hours to a few days and show a countdown. Permanent bans are only lifted if WhatsApp accepts your review.

Do I lose my chats if my number is banned?

If you have backups enabled, chats can be restored when the account is reinstated. Without a backup you may lose them.

Does the official API prevent bans?

It lowers the risk because sends go through approved templates, but Meta also limits or pauses API numbers that get many complaints.

Can I just switch to a new number?

You can, but if you repeat the same sending pattern the new number usually gets banned too.
